The Trombone Unit Hannover has taken up the challenge to present the trombone in its entire musical diversity and opens a new view on the beauty of its sound. “Excellent technique (…) combined with passion and a huge variety of sounds and expressions” wrote the Neueste Badische Nachrichten about the ensemble. Most of the members of the octet play as soloists in leading German orchestras such as the Bamberger Symphoniker, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the SWR-Sinfonieorchester, the Deutsche Radiophilharmonie, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin and at the Staatsoper Hannover. Among them are prize winners at renowned international music competitions such as the Prague Spring and the Internationaler ARD Musikwettbewerb. The Trombone Unit Hannover is the first brass ensemble to ever have won the German Music Competition (2011) − a unique occurrence in the 36 years of its existence. The ensemble was founded in 2008 by eight young trombonists who had all studied with Prof. Jonas Bylund at the College of Music in Hannover − having played chamber music together for many years this was almost a logical consequence. But the main reason for the formation of the ensemble was their love for music and their instrument as well as their personal friendship. Already in 2008 they were awarded a scholarship by the Deutscher Musikrat (German Music Council) and were accepted in the national German selection of young artists. With their creative and surprisingly diverse programmes − combining classical and modern music, original pieces and new arrangements − the Trombone Unit Hannover is active in the international concert scene. The ensemble is invited by renowned festivals such as the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Festival of the International Trombone Association in Åarhus, the Kissinger Winterzauber, the Donaueschinger Musiktage (premiere of a new work by G.F. Haas), the Deutschlandradio concert series in Cologne and to concert series and brass festivals throughout Europe. In 2011, they went on tour in Brazil and played several highly acclaimed concerts, e.g. with trombone legend Christian Lindberg. The full scope of their trombone sound is documented on their debut CD “Full Power” released in 2013 by the German label Genuin. Their second CD “Living on the Edge“ with works by Handel, Mussorgsky and Prokofiev is available since 2017. The repertoire of the Trombone Unit Hannover comprises also works for trombones and orchestra, such as Lindberg’s “Waves of Wollongong”, a fact that greatly helps to raise the level of attention for their instrument. With authenticity and dedication, with their artistic expression and due to the professionalism of their work the eight ensemble members are putting the perception of their fascinating instrument in a completely new perspective.

ヴィルトゥオーゾ・トロンボーン・アンサンブルは、韓国の有名オーケストラであるソウル市立交響楽団、京畿フィルハーモニー管弦楽団、仁川フィルハーモニック管弦楽団、水原市立交響楽団、富川フィルハーモニー管弦楽団、原州市立交響楽団などに所属する若手音楽家で構成されている。また、東亜音楽コンクール、釜山音楽コンクール、済州国際管楽器コンクールで最優秀賞を受賞するなど、メンバー全員がトロンボーンのソリストとしても活躍をしている。 トロンボーンアンサンブルとしては、KBS（韓国放送公社）のラジオ番組に始まり、定期的なコンサートがライブ放送されるとともに、トロンボーンカルテットとての録音のリリースも行った。 過去10年に渡り、韓国の芸術の殿堂などにおいて数多くのトロンボーン音楽を上演することでトロンボーンアンサンブルの韓国国内での基盤の拡大に貢献している。 2012年、2015年、2016年、2017年、2019年に彼らは芸術支援プロジェクトに選ばれ、ソウル特別市庁、ソウル文化財団、韓国文化芸術委員会の支援を受けた。また、企業の経営者や従業員への文化芸術事業として韓国メセナ協会にも選ばるのと同時に、市民への文化貢献活動も積極的に行っている。

Virtuoso Trombone Ensemble The Virutuoso Trombone Ensemble is composed of young musicians who work for famous orchestras in Korea currently, including the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra, Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra, Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra, Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra and Wonju Philharmonic Orchestra. Recognizing that the basic conditions of chamber music are tricky, the young ensemble has perfected the music and achieved a harmony of rhythm through careful and steady work. Their performances prove this fact. They won the top prize at the Dong-A Concours, Busan Concours and Jeju International Wind Competition, and all of the members are active as Trombone soloists. As a trombone ensemble, they invited KBS(Korean Broadcasting System) radio program, which is famous one in Korea, for the first time. Their regular concert was broadcast live, and they released their first record for trombone quartet. It is contributing to the expansion of the music base of the Trombone Ensemble by staging numerous trombone music at the Seoul Arts Center and others for the past decade or so, and will be the first Korean concert group to be invited to perform at the International Trombone Festival 2020. In 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019, they was selected for the art support project and received support by Seoul metropolitan Government, Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture and Arts Council Korea. They also selected by the Korea Messena Association to create a stage for corporate executives and employees to enjoy cultural arts. They work on positive lines as professional art organization with the public.

Tetsu Okamoto graduated from the Faculty of Music at Soai University in 1994. In 1995, he completed his graduate studies of the university and joined the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra in the same year. In 1997, he won the third place in the 14th Japan Wind and Percussion Competition. In 2000, he won the second prize in the 17th Japan Wind and Percussion Competition. In 2005, he moved to his current position at the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra. As an active soloist, he regularly performs solo recitals and concertos with various orchestras and brass bands throughout Japan. He has also performed in Spring Festival in Tokyo, “Tokyo Opera Nomori”, and with the Mito Chamber Orchestra He has studied trombone with Shinichi Go and Takenori Yoshikawa. Currently, he is the principal trombone player of the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra, as well as a member of the Hybrid Trombone Quartet and Japan Brass Collection. He is also a lecturer at the Elizabeth University of Music, Kyoto City University of Arts, and Souai University.

Shinichi Go is one of the most influential and successful trombonists in Japan. He dedicated himself not only to orchestral / chamber music performance, but also the education of trombonists which have included a lot of successful players who have taken orchestral positions worldwide over the last two decades. He is a graduate of Osaka College of Music and also studied at Hochschule fur Musik Detmold (Germany) from 1975. He was the Principal Trombonist for the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra for over twenty years. Currently, he is a Professor Emeritus at Kyoto City University of Arts and Visiting Professor at the Tokyo College of Music, Soai College and Osaka College of Music. As a member of Saito Kinen Orchestra, Japan Brass Collection, Izumi Sinfonietta Osaka and the leader of Hybrid Trombone Quartet, his variety of activities extends to creating new opportunities for aspiring performers. He is the President of Kansai Trombone Association and is a recipient of the Osaka Cultural Festival Award and the Kyoto City Cultural Achievement Award.

The trombonist Michael Massong was born in Germany in 1969.

He was educated at the Royal College of Music in London, where his teachers included John Iveson of the Covent Garden Royal Opera House and Christopher Mowat of the BBC Symphony. His further teachers were the legendary brass teacher Arnold Jacobs, Charles Vernon of the Chicago Symphony, Joseph Alessi of the New York Philharmonic, and the Swedish trombone soloist Christian Linberg.

Michael Massong has held principal trombone positions with the Aalborg Symphony in Denmark and the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra and Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra in Germany. Since 2014 he applies himself entirely to his career as a soloist, chamber musician and teacher.

He has been a regular guest trombonist with international orchestras such as the London Philharmonic and Liverpool Philharmonic in the United Kingdom, Bergen Philharmonic in Norway, Singapore Symphony, German Symphony Orchestra of Berlin, German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, and Cologne Opera in Germany, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, and Malaysian Philharmonic.

As a soloist and teacher in master classes, Michael Massong regularly performs in Germany, Japan, South Korea, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Scandinavia, Malaysia, Spain, Slovenia, Russia and the United States.

His performances at brass festivals around the world have included recitals at the International Trombone Festival at the University of Texas in Austin in 2009 and at the Columbus State University in 2013, SliderAsia Festival 2015 in Hong Kong.

In 2015 he has released two CDs from German classical music label MDG: a Solo CD “Singübung” the Lyrical Trombone and a CD with romantic works for trumpet, trombone and piano.

Mike Svoboda
The trombonist and composer Mike Svoboda was born 1960 on the island of Guam, grew up in Chicago and came to Germany with the help of a BMI Award to Young Composers in 1982. His eleven years as trombonist and assistant with Karlheinz Stockhausen during the 80s and 90s proved to be of eminent importance for Svoboda’s musical development. Including the collaboration with Stockhausen and other composers such as Peter Eötvös, Helmut Lachenmann, Wolfgang Rihm, Martin Smolka, David Lang, and Frank Zappa, Svoboda has premiered over 400 works for trombone at major festivals throughout the world. Mike Svoboda returned to composition only after ending his work with Stockhausen and has since received commissions, mostly for works spanning an entire concert, from festivals and opera houses such as the ECLAT festival Stuttgart, The State Opera Hannover, The National Theater Mannheim and the State Opera in Stuttgart. Major festivals have invited him to be artist or composer-in-residence. Often involved in his works as a soloist or with his own Mike Svoboda Ensemble, he composes across the borders between popular and classical music, high culture and entertainment, combining – through the use of text and various musical styles – both traditional and avant-garde. For several years now he has been working together with the playwright and stage director Manfred Weiss, who wrote the libretto to Svoboda’s chamber opera The incredible Sptoz (2007). The opera Erwin, the natural talent (2005/2007), which was premiered to great acclaim in Stuttgart in 2005 and had a second premiere in an extended version in Bielefeld in January 2008, is another example of this productive collaboration. Numerous CDs, mainly for the WERGO label, document Svoboda’s art both as an interpreter and composer. In 2008 he was awarded the Praetorius-Prize for Innovation in Music from the German government, because of, according to the jury, the “influence and recognition his concepts and ideas have had on the development of music and its performance”. Since 2007 he is professor for contemporary chamber music and trombone at the University of Music in Basel, Switzerland.

Megumi Kanda, Principal Trombone of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra is a native of Tokyo, Japan. Megumi began to play the trombone at age ten and continued her studies at the prestigious Toho High School of Music, where she studied with Sumio Miwa, trombonist in the NHK Symphony. Megumi came to the United States in 1994 and received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music where she studied with James DeSano, former Principal Trombone of the Cleveland Orchestra. Prior to joining the Milwaukee Symphony in 2002, she served as a member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, faculty member of the Eastman School of Music Community Education Division, and Principal Trombonist of the Albany Symphony Orchestra. In April 2006, Megumi was recognized by the Arion Foundation in Tokyo, Japan as one of the most influential Japanese classical artists. She has also received a Certificate of Commendation from the Consul General of Japan at Chicago in recognition for distinguished service contributing to the friendship between the United States and Japan. Megumi was named a 2017 Woman of Influence in the category of education by the Milwaukee Business Journal. Megumi has performed in recital and as a soloist across the United States, Europe and Asia with numerous orchestras and at dozens of universities and festivals. She has premiered the works of Amy Riebs Mills, Bruce Stark, and Geoffrey Gordon. Megumi’s first book, The One Hundred, a collection of orchestral trombone excerpts with accompanying commentary, was published in August 2015 by Encore Music Publishers and is a resource widely used by aspiring young trombonists around the world. As a JVC/Victor Entertainment artist, Megumi recorded three solo albums: Amazing Grace, Gloria, and Mona Lisa. Megumi is proud to be a Greenhoe clinician and performs on a Greenhoe trombone.

BIOGRAPHY Michael Buchanan (b. 1993) is widely considered one of the finest trombone players of the younger generation. At the age of 22 he was awarded the first prize and audience prize at the 2015 Munich ARD International Music Competition, only the second trombone player in the history of the competition to do so. This launched a solo career that has led to accolades such as the 2017 BMW- Publikumspreis at the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommen, an official “debut” concert together with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin in the Berlin Philharmonie and a debut at the Lucerne Festival. After initiating a complete career- break from September 2017 to December 2018 in order to heal a physical issue, Michael returned to the stage in January 2019. His first project of 2019, a debut album titled “The Many Faces of God”, has since been met with 5 star reviews (including in Germany’s prestigious Stern Magazine), a nomination for an International Classical Music Award (IMCA) and has been heavily featured on almost all major German radio stations. As concerto soloist, Michael has performed with orchestras such as the Symphonie-orchester des Bayerisches Rundfunk, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Bern Symphony Orchestra and the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin. As a recitalist, he recent and upcoming engagements at the BeethovenFest Bonn, the Festspiele Mecklenburg Vorpommerln, The Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Frauenkirche in Dresden, the Berlin Konzerthaus, Schloss Elmau, and the Lucerne Festival. Equally active as an orchestral musician, in 2016 he joined the Vienna Philharmonic and Vienna State Opera Orchestras in a contract position for the 16-17 season, undergoing multiple tours as solo/principal trombone. He is also a hand-selected principal player of Seiji Osawa’s Saito Kinen Orchestra in Japan. As a freelancer based in London, he frequently performs as principal trombone with orchestras such as the London Philharmonic, the Philharmonia, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and the London Sinfonietta. Michael received his school education at Wells Cathedral School, a specialist music school in the UK, where he studied with the renowned trombone pedagogue Alan Hutt. In 2014 he graduated with 1st Class Honours in an academic music degree from the University of Cambridge (Clare College). He completed his Masters in trombone performance under the tutelage of Ian Bousfield, at the Hochschule der Künste, Bern, Switzerland, in 2016. Michael Buchanan is a Getzen artist and plays a Getzen 4147B trombone.

Dutch composer and conductor Johan de Meij (Voorburg, 1953) received his musical training at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague, where he studied trombone and conducting. His award-winning oeuvre of original compositions, symphonic transcriptions and film score arrangements has garnered him international acclaim and have become permanent fixtures in the repertoire of renowned ensembles throughout the world. His Symphony No. 1 The Lord of the Rings was awarded the prestigious Sudler Composition Prize and has been recorded by myriad ensembles including The London Symphony Orchestra, The North Netherlands Orchestra, The Nagoya Philharmonic and The Amsterdam Wind Orchestra. His Symphony No. 2 The Big Apple, Symphony No. 3 Planet Earth, Symphony No. 4 Sinfonie der Lieder as well as his solo concertos, T-Bone Concerto (trombone), UFO Concerto (euphonium) and Casanova (cello) have been enthusiastically received at many of the world’s finest venues. International Visiting Tutor in Jazz Trombone Jiggs Whigham is an internationally acclaimed trombonist, band leader and educator. This versatile performer, born Oliver Haydn Whigham III (the nickname Jiggs was given by his grandfather) in Cleveland Ohio on 20 August 1943, first came to the attention of critics and fans at 17, as featured soloist and first trombonist with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, directed by Ray McKinley. Two years later, he was first and solo trombonist with Stan Kenton. Following a year of studio and Broadway Musical engagements in New York, he became featured soloist with the Kurt Edelhagen Jazz Orchestra at the West German Broadcasting Company in Cologne, Germany in 1965. In 1966 his was awarded 1st Prize at the first competition for Modern Jazz in Vienna.He uses Bonn, London and Cape Cod as home bases, In 1979 he was named Professor and Head of the Jazz Department at Cologne University College of Music, the first appointment of its kind in Germany. In 1995 he was named Professor for Life and head of the Jazz-Popular Music Department at the Hanns Eisler College of Music in Berlin. From 2000-2001 he was visiting professor at Indiana University. He was bandleader of the Swiss Radio Band (Radio DRS) from 1984-1986. From 1995-2000 he was chief conductor and artistic director of the Berlin Radio Orchestra (RIAS Big Band Berlin). He is currently soloist and clinician worldwide, conductor of the BBC Big Band in Great Britain, artistic director of the Berlin Jazz Orchestra and visiting tutor at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England. He is musical director of the LaJJOB (Brandenburger Youth Jazz Orchestra) and artistic director of the BUJAZZO (german jazz orchestra).
